Where is Colorado Springs?

The city is on the eastern edge of the Front Range in central Colorado, about 70 miles south of Denver along Interstate 25 and 45 miles north of Pueblo. Pikes Peak rises to 14,115 feet a dozen miles west of downtown, close enough to be the view from most of the city. Albuquerque is some 380 miles south down the same corridor, and Wichita roughly 500 miles east across the plains.

Another 6,271 residents would lift Colorado Springs past Raleigh into No. 39; 4,289 fewer would put it behind Omaha at No. 41. Within Colorado it comes second of three, behind Denver. That is about 8% of Colorado's 5.96 million residents inside a single municipal line. It holds about 66% of El Paso County's 752,772 residents.

Colorado Springs is the seat of El Paso County — the same county name as the Texas county that holds El Paso, and with about 753,000 people the most populous county in the state, as the Colorado county map shows. The city and Denver between them, with Aurora, hold the great majority of the state's people along a hundred-mile strip at the base of the mountains. Where the plains hit the Front Range

The break here is abrupt: the Great Plains end and the Rocky Mountains start within a couple of miles, with tilted red sandstone slabs standing on end at Garden of the Gods where the uplift shoved the older rock skyward. Fountain Creek drains the city south to the Arkansas River at Pueblo. The altitude, from about 6,000 feet in the city to the top of Pikes Peak, gives a vertical range of more than 8,000 feet inside a single county, and the mountain wall wrings out most of the moisture before it reaches town.
