Privacy policy
Short version: this site sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and sends nothing about you to anyone else.
What is collected
Nothing, by the site itself. There are no accounts, no logins, no comment threads, no newsletter, no advertising, and no analytics script of any kind. No cookies are set. Nothing you do on a page — which state you click, which quiz answer you pick, which map you download — is recorded or transmitted anywhere. The quiz keeps your score in the browser tab and forgets it the moment you close it.
No third-party requests
Every file a page loads comes from mapofamerica.net: the stylesheet, the map library (a self-hosted copy of Leaflet), the boundary data, the SVGs, the favicon. There are no web fonts, no CDNs, no embedded videos, no social widgets, no tracking pixels. That means no other company learns that you visited, because no other company is contacted when you do. It is also why the pages load quickly.
What the web host sees
Like every website, this one is served by a hosting provider, and that provider keeps standard server logs — IP address, timestamp, requested URL, user agent — for a short period for security and abuse handling. Those logs are not analysed for audience measurement, are not combined with anything else, and are not shared. The site's operator does not build profiles from them.
If you write to the address on the contact page, that mail is stored in an ordinary mailbox until it has been dealt with. It is not added to a mailing list, not shared, and not used for anything but replying to you.
Children
The site is widely used in classrooms and is built for it: because nothing is collected from anyone, nothing is collected from children either. No sign-in is possible, so no student data can be entered.
Changes
If analytics are ever added, they will be a privacy-preserving, cookie-free, self-hosted measure, and this page will say so before they go live rather than after.
