Where is Jacksonville?

Jacksonville stands about 20 miles up the St. Johns River from the Atlantic, in the northeastern corner of Florida and roughly 30 miles south of the Georgia line. It is about 140 miles north of Orlando, roughly 200 miles northeast of Tampa, and some 345 miles southeast of Atlanta — as far from Miami as it is from Atlanta, which is a good corrective to how people picture Florida.

Another 316,254 residents would lift Jacksonville past Dallas into No. 9; 1,727 fewer would put it behind Fort Worth at No. 11. No other Florida city on the list comes near it: next are Miami, Tampa and Orlando. Against Florida's 23.37 million residents, though, that is only about 4.3%. It holds about 96% of Duval County's 1,055,159 residents.

Because the consolidated government covers the whole of Duval County, the Florida county map shows city and county as one shape. Florida's other big cities lie well to the south: Orlando in the center, Tampa and St. Petersburg on the Gulf, and Miami and Hialeah at the southeastern tip. The capital, Tallahassee, is about 165 miles west along the panhandle, and past it the panhandle changes to Central Time; the Florida state page has the rest.

The St. Johns River

The St. Johns is one of the few large rivers in North America that flows north, running some 300 miles up the Florida peninsula before turning east at Jacksonville and reaching the Atlantic. Its fall is tiny — a matter of inches per mile — so the lower river is broad, tidal and brackish, spreading to two or three miles across south of the city before it narrows to a few hundred yards under the downtown bridges. That deep-water reach makes Jacksonville a working port, and the river's bridges are the organizing fact of the city's road map.
